Why can't modern gypsum plaster or cement render be used on an old house?
Older solid-wall buildings were designed to let moisture evaporate through breathable materials. Modern gypsum and cement-based products are far less permeable, and can trap moisture within the wall, leading to damp, timber decay and, eventually, more extensive repair than if a breathable lime system had been used.
Do I need listed building consent for lime plaster or render repairs?
If the property is listed, works affecting its character — internal or external — usually need listed building consent, separate from Building Regulations. We check this and, where consent is needed, factor the application process into the programme.
How long does lime plaster take to cure?
Lime plaster cures by slowly absorbing carbon dioxide from the air (carbonation), which takes considerably longer than modern gypsum plaster — often weeks between coats rather than days, and longer still before full strength is reached. This is built into the project programme from the outset.
