Our process
What happens after you get in touch
- 01
Enquiry and initial conversation
You tell us about the project, the property and roughly what you have in mind, either through the quote form or by phone. We confirm whether it's a good fit and arrange a site visit.
- 02
Site visit and survey
We visit the property to understand the building, the site constraints and what you're trying to achieve, and talk through realistic options before anything is designed.
- 03
Design and approvals
Depending on the project, this covers layout drawings, structural input, and any planning or Building Regulations submissions needed before construction can start.
- 04
Written, itemised quotation
You receive a detailed quotation broken down by element, with any provisional sums clearly flagged, so you know what is fixed and what depends on conditions found once work starts.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What areas does The Weald Group cover?
We work across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and South London, including Crawley, Horsham, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Reigate, Redhill, Horley, Dorking, Guildford, Brighton and Hove, Worthing, Lewes, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Croydon, Bromley and Sutton. See our Areas We Cover page for full detail on each location and its neighbourhoods.
How do I get a quote?
Use the Request a Quote form to tell us about your project, or call us directly. We'll arrange a site visit to understand the property and your brief before providing a written, itemised quotation.
Is the initial quote free?
Yes, the initial site visit and quotation are provided at no charge and without obligation.
What happens if I'm not available for a booked appointment?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel a scheduled visit. If we attend an appointment as arranged and are unable to gain access, without prior notice, a missed appointment fee equivalent to one hour's labour may be charged.
How long does a typical project take?
It depends entirely on the type and scale of work. Each service page sets out typical timescales, and you receive a specific programme for your project once the design and specification are agreed.
Do you handle planning permission and Building Regulations?
Yes, we coordinate planning and Building Regulations applications as part of the project where required, and advise on the likely route (permitted development or full planning permission) at the feasibility stage.
What happens if planning permission is refused?
We advise on the likelihood of approval based on local policy and precedent before you commit to a full application, to reduce this risk. If a scheme is refused, we discuss options including amending the design or appealing, depending on the reasons given.
Do you offer fixed-price contracts?
We provide detailed, itemised quotations with any provisional sums clearly identified for items that cannot be priced with certainty until work is opened up (such as concealed structural issues). This is agreed with you in writing before work starts.
Can I stay in my home during building work?
For many extension, renovation and conversion projects, yes — we agree access, phasing and any temporary arrangements with you before work starts so you know what to expect.
Do you carry out gas work?
Any work on gas appliances or gas pipework is carried out only by Gas Safe registered engineers, in line with legal requirements.
How do I raise a concern or complaint?
Please contact us directly in the first instance so we can resolve the issue. Details of our complaints procedure are available on the Contact page.
What services does The Weald Group provide?
We cover the full build lifecycle, from structural building work, extensions and conversions through to bathrooms, kitchens, electrics, roofing, drainage and plumbing and heating. See our full list of services for the complete range.
Do you take on small jobs, or only large projects?
We work on projects of all sizes, from a single repair through to a full renovation. If you're not sure whether your job is the right fit, the quickest way to find out is to tell us about it and we'll advise honestly either way.
What does "single point of contact" actually mean in practice?
It means one person at The Weald Group is accountable for your project from first enquiry to handover, coordinating every trade involved rather than you having to manage separate contractors, chase separate invoices, or resolve disagreements between trades yourself. See our process for how this works stage by stage.
Can I see examples of your previous work?
Yes — our project case studies set out the brief, the challenges, the work carried out and the outcome for real, completed projects, with photography where available.
How can I check your reviews before getting in touch?
Genuine client reviews, and the independent platforms we use, are listed on our reviews page. We do not publish invented testimonials.
Are you insured?
Yes. Details of our insurance cover, trade memberships and any guarantees are set out on our accreditations and guarantees page — we would rather you check this than take it on trust.
What trade accreditations and registrations do you hold?
Our current accreditations, registrations and trade memberships, including registration numbers where applicable, are listed in full on the accreditations and guarantees page.
Can you remove a load-bearing wall or carry out other structural work?
Yes, structural alterations are supported by qualified engineering input and, where required, Building Control approval. See our building and construction page for how we approach structural work.
Can you manage a project that needs several different trades — for example an extension with a new kitchen and rewired electrics?
Yes, this is exactly what a single point of contact is for: coordinating structural, electrical, plumbing and finishing trades under one programme instead of you managing each separately. Our design and build service is built around projects like this.
Do I need my own architect, or can you handle design as well as construction?
Either is possible. Our design and build service covers layout and design input alongside construction under a single contract, or we can work from drawings you already have.
What's the difference between a renovation and a general refurbishment?
In practice the terms overlap; both cover updating, repairing or modernising an existing property, from a single room through to a full strip-out. See our renovations and refurbishments page for what this typically involves.
Do you work on listed buildings or properties in a conservation area?
Yes, though listed status and conservation area designation affect what consents are needed and which materials can be used. Our guide to permitted development explains where these restrictions typically apply.
How do I know if my project needs planning permission?
It depends on the size, position and planning history of your property. Our guide to planning permission for extensions sets out what generally pushes a project into needing a full application.
Should I choose an extension, a loft conversion or a garage conversion?
It depends on the space you need, your budget and what your property allows for. We compare all three directly in this guide, including typical planning route and key constraints for each.
What actually affects the cost of a project like an extension?
Ground conditions, roof design, how much plumbing and electrics need to move, glazing specification and finish level all make a real difference. We explain the genuine cost drivers, without invented headline prices, in this guide.
Do I have to pay VAT on my renovation or extension?
Most home renovation and extension work is charged at the standard 20% rate, though specific situations such as long-empty properties or genuine new builds can qualify for a reduced or zero rate. See our VAT guide for how this works.
What should I check before choosing a builder?
Warning signs are usually visible before work starts — an unbroken-down price, pressure for a large cash deposit, and no evidence of insurance. We set these out in full in this guide.
What is a party wall agreement, and will my project need one?
The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 can apply to work on or near a shared wall or boundary, separately from planning permission and Building Regulations. Our guide to party wall agreements explains when it typically applies and how the process works.
I have damp in an older property — can you help, and what causes it?
Usually, yes — but the right fix depends on correctly diagnosing whether it's penetrating damp, rising damp, condensation or a leak. See our guide to damp in older homes, and our renovations page for how this fits into a wider project.
How do I know if my boiler needs replacing rather than repairing?
Repeated breakdowns, rising bills for the same usage, unusual noises and a failed annual service are the clearest signs. We cover this in this guide, and our boilers and heating systems page covers installation and repair.
Do you carry out emergency repairs, such as a burst pipe or total loss of heating?
Yes, see our emergency call-outs page for the situations we cover and what to do if you have an urgent issue.
Do you work on commercial premises, or only residential homes?
We carry out light commercial building, refurbishment and maintenance work as well as residential projects. See our commercial services page for the scale of work we take on.
Which towns and areas do you cover in the most detail?
We work across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and South London — our areas we cover page lists every town individually, with local property styles, planning considerations and neighbourhood coverage for each.
I have a question before I'm ready to request a quote — who do I speak to?
You can reach us directly via our contact page — you don't need to have a fully formed brief before getting in touch.
Do you guarantee your work?
Workmanship is covered under our own guarantee, and materials carry the relevant manufacturer warranty. Current details are set out on our accreditations and guarantees page.
Everyone seems to be installing air conditioning this summer — is it worth it, and will I have to wait a long time?
Demand for domestic air conditioning has risen sharply industry-wide during recent UK heatwaves, and installers can book up for several weeks at peak times. See our guide to what to expect when booking during high-demand periods, and our air conditioning page for how installation works.
Do I need planning permission to fit air conditioning at my home?
Usually not — most domestic split systems fall under permitted development, though conservation areas, listed buildings and flats can have restrictions on external unit positioning. Our full guide to planning permission for air conditioning covers when it applies.
