Supply and installation of video doorbells

Video Doorbell Installation

A video doorbell is a camera-equipped doorbell that lets you see, hear and speak to visitors remotely via a smartphone app, and installation covers mounting the unit, connecting it to existing bell wiring or a battery power source, and setting up the app and any chime.

Definition

What Video Doorbells covers

A video doorbell combines a standard doorbell push with a camera, microphone and speaker, so you can see and talk to whoever is at the door from a smartphone app whether or not you're home. Installation ranges from a straightforward swap onto existing bell wiring and transformer, through to a wire-free battery unit where no suitable wiring exists, with the choice affecting both fitting method and ongoing charging or maintenance.

Suitable for

  • Replacing a standard doorbell with a video doorbell on existing wiring
  • Wire-free battery-powered doorbells where no suitable existing wiring is present
  • Integrating a video doorbell with an existing smart home or CCTV system
  • Rental properties and second homes where remote visibility is useful

Not suitable for

  • Full CCTV coverage of a property beyond the entrance — see our CCTV and security service for multi-camera systems
  • Communal entry systems for blocks of flats or multi-occupancy buildings — see our intercom and access control service

Process

How the work is carried out

  1. 01

    Assessment

Checking existing doorbell wiring, transformer capacity and WiFi signal strength at the door position.

  2. 02

    Selection

Agreeing wired or wire-free doorbell type, and whether it needs to work with an existing mechanical or wired chime.

  3. 03

    Installation

Mounting the doorbell and connecting to existing wiring, or fitting a wire-free unit.

  4. 04

    Configuration

Connecting to WiFi, setting up the app, and testing chime and notifications before handover.

Typical timescale

A standard video doorbell installation is typically completed within a single visit.

Cost guidance

Video doorbell installation typically costs £80–£200 per install in our area, with wired versus wire-free doorbells and any existing chime compatibility affecting where in the range a job falls. We provide an itemised quotation after a site visit rather than a fixed headline price.

Limitations and exclusions

  • The doorbell unit itself is supplied as part of a fitted package unless you specify your own
  • Camera positioning is advised with data protection considerations in mind, particularly where the field of view includes neighbouring property
  • Ongoing app, cloud storage or subscription costs for some doorbells are set by the manufacturer, separate from the installation cost

FAQs

Video Doorbells FAQs

Can you fit a video doorbell if I don't have existing doorbell wiring?

Yes, a wire-free battery-powered video doorbell doesn't need existing bell wiring, though the battery will need periodic recharging or replacement, which we explain at handover.

Will a video doorbell work with my existing chime?

It depends on the chime type — some wired video doorbells work with an existing mechanical or wired chime, others need a compatible replacement chime unit. We check this during assessment before recommending a doorbell.

Are there data protection considerations with a video doorbell facing the street?

As with CCTV, a doorbell camera capturing a public pavement or neighbouring property can raise data protection considerations. We advise on positioning to cover your own entrance appropriately while minimising this.
