What Microcement covers
Microcement is a cement-based coating applied by trowel in multiple thin layers over a suitably prepared and primed substrate, then sealed to make it water-resistant. Because it's applied as a continuous surface rather than individual tiles, it has no grout lines — giving a seamless look that's particularly popular in wet rooms and contemporary bathroom designs — but it requires a sound, properly prepared substrate and a sealed topcoat that needs to be specified correctly for wet areas.

- Areas needing full waterproofing (tanking) beneath the surface where microcement alone isn't an appropriate substitute — we specify tanking and microcement together for wet areas

Typical timescale
A microcement application typically takes one to two weeks from start to finish, including drying and curing time between coats, which cannot be rushed without affecting the finish.

Microcement typically costs £90–£180 per m² in our area, with the number of coats and the complexity of detailing — corners, upstands and floor-to-wall transitions — affecting where a job falls in that range. We provide an itemised quotation after a site visit rather than a fixed headline price.
Limitations and exclusions
- Microcement depends on a sound, properly prepared substrate — any structural or movement issues in the base need addressing first
- Wet area applications are tanked beneath the microcement in line with normal waterproofing practice, not treated as a substitute for tanking

Is microcement suitable for a shower floor?
Yes, provided the substrate is tanked beneath it in the same way as for tiling, and a wet-area-rated sealed topcoat is used. It's a popular seamless alternative to tiling in wet rooms.
Does microcement crack?
Microcement itself is flexible and resists surface cracking, but it will reflect movement in an unstable substrate beneath it, which is why substrate assessment and preparation matters before application starts.
How does microcement compare to tiling for maintenance?
With no grout lines, there's less to clean and no grout to discolour over time, but the sealed topcoat needs to be maintained and reapplied periodically, particularly in wet or high-traffic areas, to keep it water-resistant.
