Off-grid heating installation and servicing

LPG and Oil Heating

LPG and oil heating covers the installation, servicing and repair of heating systems for properties without a mains gas connection, using either bottled or tanked LPG or an oil-fired boiler, carried out by engineers registered for the relevant fuel type.

Definition

What LPG & Oil Heating covers

Many rural and off-grid properties in our area rely on LPG (liquid petroleum gas, stored in a tank or bottles) or oil-fired heating rather than mains gas. These systems have their own installation, storage and servicing requirements — LPG work falls under Gas Safe registration in the LPG category, while oil systems are worked on by OFTEC-registered engineers rather than Gas Safe.

Suitable for

  • Properties without a mains gas connection needing a new or replacement heating system
  • LPG tank or bottle-fed heating installations
  • Oil-fired boiler installation, servicing and repair
  • Households considering a switch between LPG, oil or another heating source

Not suitable for

  • Work on LPG systems by anyone not Gas Safe registered in the LPG category, or oil systems by anyone not OFTEC registered — these are genuine registration requirements
  • Mains gas properties, where our standard Gas Safe registered boiler installation service is the relevant one

Process

How the work is carried out

  1. 01

    Assessment

Reviewing the existing system, fuel storage and property heat demand.

  2. 02

    Specification

Agreeing appliance type, fuel storage arrangements and any relocation needed.

  3. 03

    Installation or repair

Carrying out the installation, service or repair to the standards for the relevant fuel type.

  4. 04

    Certification

Issuing the appropriate certification for the fuel type and work carried out.

Typical timescale

Servicing is typically completed within a visit; installation timescales depend on the scope of work and are confirmed after assessment.

Cost guidance

LPG and oil heating work is priced individually following a site assessment, as costs vary significantly with the existing system, fuel storage arrangements and property. We provide a specialist quotation after visiting the property rather than a generic price.

Limitations and exclusions

  • LPG work is carried out by engineers Gas Safe registered in the LPG category; oil work is carried out by OFTEC-registered engineers
  • Fuel storage tank supply, siting and any related regulations (such as distance from boundaries) are confirmed during assessment
  • Fuel supply and delivery contracts are arranged separately by the property owner

FAQs

LPG & Oil Heating FAQs

Is LPG work covered by Gas Safe registration?

Yes, but under a separate LPG category on the Gas Safe Register — an engineer registered for mains natural gas isn't automatically qualified for LPG. We check and confirm registration for the fuel type involved.

Who is qualified to work on an oil-fired boiler?

OFTEC-registered engineers, rather than Gas Safe, which covers mains and LPG gas only. It's worth checking an engineer's OFTEC registration before any oil heating work goes ahead.

Can I switch from oil to LPG or another heating source?

Often yes, though feasibility depends on the site, existing storage and property. We assess the practical options — including alternatives such as a heat pump — during a site visit.
