Installation requests for domestic air conditioning rise sharply industry-wide during UK heatwaves. Here is what that means for lead times, sizing and whether every room actually needs it.

Short answer: demand for domestic air conditioning has risen sharply across the UK during recent heatwaves — industry-wide booking data has shown installation requests up several hundred per cent year-on-year during peak hot spells — which means longer lead times at installers generally, not just here. Booking early, getting a proper room-by-room assessment rather than a generic quote, and checking F-Gas and planning basics upfront all help avoid disappointment.

Why demand has spiked

The UK has seen a run of significant summer heatwaves in recent years, with some regions recording their hottest June on record. Only a small proportion of UK homes have any form of air conditioning, and when temperatures climb, a lot of homeowners look for cooling at the same time — trade booking platforms and retailers have reported installation enquiries and fan sales rising steeply within days of a heatwave starting.

That surge affects the whole industry, not one company: installers everywhere can book up for several weeks once hot weather sets in, and stock of some unit sizes can run low at short notice.

What longer lead times mean in practice

If you're enquiring during or just after a heatwave, realistic expectations matter more than a fast promise. A proper installation involves sizing the system to the room, agreeing indoor and outdoor unit positions, and — because refrigerant handling is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers — booking someone qualified to do that work, not just anyone with a ladder. Rushing this stage to hit a date tends to cause more problems than it solves.

Enquiring before the next heatwave, rather than during one, is the most reliable way to get installed for the summer you're planning for.

Is air conditioning the right answer for every room?

Not automatically. Experts have also cautioned that widespread air conditioning adoption increases household electricity demand and bills, and — at a city-wide scale — can add to the urban heat island effect. For many homes, a combination of shading, ventilation and insulation improvements reduces the need for mechanical cooling in the first place, with air conditioning reserved for rooms that genuinely overheat, such as south-facing bedrooms, home offices or converted lofts. We'll say so plainly during the assessment if a smaller system, or no system at all, is the more sensible answer for a particular room.

What to check before you commit
