Best Time of Year to Lay a Driveway or Patio in the UK
Weather affects groundworks more than most other trades. Here's how timing affects a driveway or patio project, and why planning it now can mean a spring start.
Short answer: late spring through early autumn generally gives the most reliable working conditions for laying a driveway or patio, since groundworks, concrete and mortar all need reasonably dry, frost-free conditions to go in properly. That makes autumn and winter the right time to plan and quote a project, ready to start as soon as conditions allow.
Why weather matters more here than for most other trades
Excavating and compacting a sub-base in waterlogged ground doesn't compact properly and can lead to settlement later. Concrete and mortar both cure more slowly, and less reliably, in cold or frosty conditions — a hard frost shortly after laying can damage the surface before it's had a chance to set. None of this makes winter work impossible, but it does narrow the margin for error and can extend timescales, which is why most groundworks contractors, us included, plan the bulk of driveway and patio work for drier months.
What you can do now
Surveys, design, material selection and getting a written quote don't depend on the weather at all. Getting this done in autumn means a project is genuinely ready to start the moment spring conditions are reliable, rather than only starting the conversation once the weather's already turned — which typically pushes the actual work back by a full season.
Drainage is worth getting right from the start
Since October 2008, planning permission has generally been required for a new or replacement impermeable driveway over 5 square metres at the front of a house, unless the water drains to a permeable area or a soakaway rather than the public drainage system. Permeable paving, gravel and similar surfaces that let water drain through are usually exempt. It's worth checking this at the design stage — see our patios and driveways service for how we handle drainage as standard, not an afterthought.
